The modelled simple payback on a 10 kWh battery is 7-10 years with current WA rebates, but that is a first-year view: grid prices tend to rise and evening loads tend to grow, so judge a battery over its life. For evening-heavy homes, a bigger array plus a battery often wins. If you're mostly home during the day, solar on a hybrid inverter first keeps a battery a simple add-on later. How long do home batteries last?
Quality home batteries like Tesla Powerwall and BYD typically last 10-15 years and come with 10-year warranties. Most are rated for 6,000-10,000 cycles, which equates to daily cycling for 15-25 years.
What size battery do I need?
Size the battery to your evening and overnight use: the energy you buy from the grid after the sun goes down. Undersizing is the costly mistake, because adding capacity later usually means a second installation. Homes with an EV or heavy evening loads need more. Our calculator sizes it from your bill.
Can I add a battery to my existing solar?
Yes, two ways. Replacing your inverter with a hybrid is usually the sounder path: the battery charges on the DC side, and with a battery attached a hybrid allows a bigger array. Keeping your system and adding an AC-coupled battery also works, but under WA's rules since 1 May 2026 it counts as an alteration, which in practice brings whole-of-site compliance into play. It needs a gateway on Synergy's Supported Solutions List, or a same-brand pairing, to keep rebate, VPP and loan eligibility; without one, export is fixed at 1.5 kW. Get both quoted.
Do batteries work during blackouts?
Yes, but only if your system is configured for backup. Most installations include a backup gateway that disconnects from the grid during outages, allowing your battery to power essential circuits.
