Home EV charging in WA: everything you need to know
Install an EV charger at home in WA: compare charging speeds, costs, the best chargers for Perth homes, and Synergy's EV tariff explained.

EV sales in WA are climbing fast. If you've bought one (or you're about to), a home charger can pay for itself quickly for solar owners who shift most charging into surplus generation. No more public-charger queues, and your running costs drop to a fraction of what you'd pay at a public station.
Why charge at home?
Home charging beats public charging on almost every measure:
- Convenience: wake up to a full battery every morning
- Cost: home electricity is cheaper than a public charger
- Time: charge overnight while you sleep
- Solar integration: charge from your own surplus solar for about 2c/kWh — the export credit you forgo, far below the grid rate
The cost comparison
| Charging Location | Cost per kWh | Cost per 100km | |-------------------|--------------|----------------| | Home (standard A1 rate) | $0.32 | $5.76 | | Home (EV Add-On overnight) | $0.19 | $3.42 | | Home (surplus solar)* | ~$0.02 | ~$0.36 | | Public AC charger | $0.45 | $8.10 | | Public DC fast charger | $0.60+ | $10.80+ |
Based on average EV consumption of 18 kWh per 100km. Home rates use Synergy's A1 flat rate (32.37c/kWh, rising to 33.26c/kWh from 1 July 2026) and the EV Add-On overnight rate (19.38c/kWh). The "surplus solar" row isn't truly free — it reflects the ~2c/kWh DEBS export credit you forgo by self-consuming instead of exporting.
Understanding charging levels
Level 1: standard power point (2.3 kW)
- What it is: your regular household outlet
- Speed: 10-15 km range per hour
- Best for: PHEVs, occasional short-range EVs
- Cost: no hardware cost (uses an existing power point)
Level 2: dedicated EV charger (7-22 kW)
- What it is: a purpose-built wall-mounted charger
- Speed: 40-120 km range per hour
- Best for: most EV owners
- Cost: $1,500 - $3,500 installed
Level 3: DC fast charging (50 kW+)
- What it is: commercial rapid chargers
- Speed: 200-500 km range per hour
- Best for: public charging, road trips
- Cost: not suitable for home installation

Synergy's electric vehicle tariff explained
Synergy offers an EV Add-On plan with a cheaper overnight rate. For overnight charging it works out at around 40% less per kWh than the A1 flat rate.
How it works
- Time-of-use pricing, with the cheapest window overnight
- Overnight (11pm-6am): around 19.4c/kWh — this is when you charge the car
- Midday super off-peak (9am-3pm): around 8.6c/kWh — handy if you can charge from the grid in the middle of the day
- Peak (3pm-9pm): around 53.8c/kWh — the window to avoid
Who should use it?
The EV tariff suits you if:
- You can charge overnight (most EV owners can)
- You have a smart charger with scheduling
- Your general usage doesn't climb during the peak window
Requirements
- Smart meter installation (free from Synergy)
- A compatible EV charger with scheduling
- At least one registered electric vehicle
Solar + EV charging
Solar and EV charging together is where the real savings stack up.
The numbers
- Average EV annual distance: 15,000 km
- Energy required: 2,700 kWh
- Cost on the A1 flat rate: about $864/year
- Cost on the EV Add-On overnight rate: about $513/year
- Cost with surplus solar: roughly $50-150/year (the export credit you forgo, plus grid top-ups when solar is short)
Smart solar charging
Modern EV chargers like the Zappi can automatically:
- Detect surplus solar generation
- Adjust charging speed to match available solar
- Switch to grid power when clouds pass
- Resume solar charging when the sun returns
That means most of your driving runs on your own rooftop solar — charged for about 2c/kWh (the export credit you forgo), not the grid rate.
Installation requirements
Electrical considerations
Before installing a home charger, think about a few things.
Single-phase vs three-phase
| Connection | Max Charger Speed | Notes | |------------|-------------------|-------| | Single-phase | 7.4kW | Most WA homes | | Three-phase | 22kW | Faster charging, requires upgrade |
Most WA homes have single-phase power, which supports chargers up to 7.4 kW — enough to fully charge most EVs overnight.
Switchboard capacity
Your electrician will assess:
- Available capacity on your switchboard
- Whether any upgrades are needed
- Circuit-breaker requirements
- Cable runs to the charging location
Ideal charger placement
A few factors to weigh:
- Proximity to switchboard: shorter cable runs keep the cost down
- Vehicle parking position: easy access to the charge port
- Weather protection: undercover locations are best
- Future needs: will you add a second EV?
Installation process
Timeline
- Site assessment (1-2 days): electrician visits and provides a quote
- Order and permit (1-2 weeks): charger ordered, permit if required
- Installation (half day): charger mounted and wired
- Testing and handover (1 hour): system checked, app set up
Typical costs
| Component | Cost Range | |-----------|------------| | EV charger unit | $1,100 - $2,500 | | Installation (standard) | $500 - $1,000 | | Installation (complex) | $1,000 - $2,000 | | Switchboard upgrade (if needed) | $500 - $2,000 | | Total typical | $2,000 - $4,500 |
Common questions
Can I use a regular power point?
Yes, but it's not ideal for daily use:
- Very slow (10-15 km range per hour)
- May overload older circuits
- Not designed for sustained high loads
- No smart features or scheduling
Do I need a permit?
In most WA cases, no permit is required for:
- Chargers up to 32A on existing circuits
- Standard residential installations
Your electrician will advise if a permit is needed.
Will it increase my electricity bill?
Your bill will go up, but you come out ahead overall:
- EV charging replaces petrol costs
- A typical EV costs $800-1,200/year to charge
- A typical petrol car costs $2,500-4,000/year to run
- Net saving: roughly $1,500-3,000 a year (illustrative — your own figure depends on your tariff, solar, and driving)
Can I charge in the rain?
Yes. All certified EV chargers are:
- Rated for outdoor use (IP65 or better)
- Designed with weather sealing
- Safe in all Australian conditions
