How to apply for the WA Battery Scheme rebate: step-by-step guide
The WA Battery Scheme offers $130/kWh (max $1,300) for eligible residential battery installations on Synergy accounts. Here's how the application process works, what documentation you need, and what to do if your application is delayed.

The WA Battery Scheme provides a rebate of $130 per kilowatt-hour of battery storage, up to a maximum of $1,300 (capped at 10kWh of rebate-eligible capacity). The rebate is administered by Synergy and applies to residential batteries connected to Synergy-supplied accounts. Here's how the application process works in practice.
Eligibility requirements (summary)
Before applying, confirm your installation meets all eligibility criteria:
- Synergy account holder: The property must be supplied by Synergy under a residential tariff (A1, Midday Saver, or REBS). Properties on Horizon Power or other retailers are not eligible.
- Minimum 5kW solar system: The property must have ≥5kW of solar installed before or concurrent with the battery
- Battery on the Sustainable Storage List (SSL): The battery model must appear on Synergy's SSL. Not all batteries sold in Perth are SSL-listed. Confirm SSL status before purchasing the battery.
- CEC-accredited installer: The installation must be performed by a CEC-accredited installer
- Residential use only: Commercial premises are not eligible
- New installation: Rebates are for new battery installations; pre-existing batteries are not eligible
Eligible battery capacity
The rebate applies to "usable storage capacity" as listed on the SSL for each battery model:
- $130 per kWh of usable storage, up to 10kWh of eligible capacity
- Maximum rebate: $1,300 per property (even if multiple batteries are installed)
- Minimum eligible capacity: battery must have ≥1kWh usable storage
Examples:
- 5kWh usable capacity (e.g. smaller BYD or Sungrow unit): $130 × 5 = $650 rebate
- 10kWh usable capacity (e.g. larger BYD B-Box or Sungrow SBR): $130 × 10 = $1,300 rebate (maximum)
- 13.5kWh (Tesla Powerwall 2): SSL-listed capacity up to 10kWh rebate-eligible = $1,300 rebate (same as 10kWh cap)
Note on Tesla Powerwall 3: As of June 2026, the Tesla Powerwall 3 is not on Synergy's SSL because its integrated inverter does not meet the SSL technical requirements for separate inverter configurations. Do not assume Powerwall 3 is eligible — confirm SSL status directly with Synergy before purchasing. Powerwall 2 remains on the SSL.
The application process
Step 1: Install the battery
Your CEC-accredited installer completes the battery and solar installation. Ensure you receive:
- Installation completion certificate/commissioning report
- Certificate of Compliance (electrical)
- Inverter and battery make, model, and serial numbers
- NCN confirmation (Western Power Network Connection Notice, if applicable for new solar)
Step 2: Your installer notifies Synergy (installer-led application)
In most cases, the installer initiates the WA Battery Scheme rebate application on your behalf. Your installer must be registered as a WA Battery Scheme participant and submits the application with:
- Customer Synergy account details
- Battery and solar system specifications
- Certificate of Compliance
- Installation completion certificate
Confirm with your installer before installation that they will handle the rebate application. Some installers include this in their quoted service; others pass the application to the customer.
Step 3: Synergy processes the application
Synergy reviews the application for:
- Account holder eligibility (Synergy residential tariff)
- Solar capacity confirmation (≥5kW)
- Battery SSL status
- Installer CEC accreditation
Processing time: typically 4–12 weeks after application is submitted.
Step 4: Rebate credited to your Synergy account
When approved, Synergy credits the rebate to your electricity account as a credit against future bills — it appears as a credit on your next Synergy statement(s). Synergy does not issue a cheque or bank transfer; the rebate reduces your electricity charges.
For large credits: A $1,300 credit on a household using $200–$300/month in electricity takes 4–6 months to work through as bill credits. If your bills are very low (due to solar), it may take longer. Contact Synergy if you'd like to discuss alternative arrangements for large outstanding credits.
What to do if your application is delayed
After 12 weeks with no rebate credit: Contact Synergy on 13 13 53. Ask for the status of your WA Battery Scheme rebate application. Provide:
- Your Synergy account number
- The application reference if known (your installer should have this)
- Approximate application date
Common delay causes:
- Missing documentation (your installer submitted an incomplete application)
- SSL verification pending (for newer battery models recently added to the list)
- Account holder mismatch (application submitted under a different name than the Synergy account holder)
If your installer hasn't submitted: If your installer didn't submit the application or has gone out of business, you may be able to apply directly to Synergy. Contact Synergy's customer service team to request a customer-direct application pathway — documentation requirements are the same, but you'll need to gather the technical documentation yourself.
Can I apply for the rebate myself?
The WA Battery Scheme application process is primarily installer-led, but Synergy does have a process for customers to apply directly in circumstances where the installer is unable to submit on their behalf.
If your installer has failed (business closure, no longer trading), contact Synergy and explain the situation. You'll need to provide the installation documentation yourself — a licensed electrician can prepare the Certificate of Compliance documentation if the original installer is unavailable.
Checking SSL status before purchasing
The Synergy Sustainable Storage List is updated periodically as new battery products are assessed. Before committing to a battery purchase:
- Ask your installer to confirm the specific battery model (brand + model number) is currently on the SSL
- Request the SSL listing documentation in writing
- Confirm the rebate-eligible capacity from the SSL (not the battery's rated capacity — they may differ)
The SSL is publicly accessible through Synergy. Do not rely on the installer's verbal assurance alone — confirm the exact model is listed.
The WA Battery Scheme rebate is applied to your Synergy account, not paid in cash. If your solar bill savings are large enough that your account is frequently near-zero, the rebate still accrues and will reduce your future bills — it doesn't expire.
