What a solar battery actually costs
Ask "how much is a solar battery" and you'll get answers spanning a small-car price range. All of them are technically true, which is exactly the problem. The honest answer has three parts — the box, the system around it, and the rebates — and once you see how they stack, every quote you receive becomes legible.

The three layers of the price
The battery itself
Hardware pricing mostly tracks capacity — think in dollars per kilowatt-hour of usable storage, because that's the unit doing the work. Chemistry, brand and warranty terms move the per-kWh figure; capacity moves the total.
The system around it
The same battery needs an inverter to run it — a hybrid replacing or joining your solar inverter — plus switchboard work, cabling, mounting and the installer's time. This is the layer that surprises people.
The site itself
Distance from switchboard to battery location, phase of your supply, age of the board, shade over the preferred mounting spot — small line items individually, real money together.
Layer two is why two quotes for the identical battery can honestly differ by thousands. Whether your existing setup carries some of that load, or all of it has to be built, changes the number — neither installer is cheating; they're quoting different systems.

Federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount
Comes off through small-scale technology certificates at the current period's factor (6.8×) — and that factor steps down on a published schedule, so the same battery gets slightly dearer at each step. Roughly $2,713 on a 10 kWh Perth install at today's rate.

Solar battery prices across Australia vs WA
If you're comparing against Australia-wide battery price guides, read them with one adjustment in mind: the hardware and install layers price much the same nationally, but the rebate layer doesn't travel. The federal certificate discount applies across Australia; the state layer is different in every state, and WA's scheme is specific to Synergy-network households. A national after-rebate "average" therefore rarely matches a qualifying Perth home's real net cost — a home stacking both layers pays less than most national figures assume — which is why every worked figure on this page is WA-specific rather than a national average.
Where to find honest price ranges
We deliberately don't print a hardware price table here: a static list drifts stale within months, and a stale price is worse than none. How to read a quote like we do
- Reduce it to $/usable kWh:
- Installed dollars per usable kilowatt-hour, after rebates. It's the one number that survives comparison across brands, sizes and bundles.
- Check the inverter premise:
- "Compatible with your current setup" and "includes a new hybrid" are different systems at different prices — and in WA they can be different rebate outcomes.
- Ask what's excluded:
- Switchboard upgrades and travel are the classic quiet extras.
- Ignore the RRP theatre:
- A big "discount" off an inflated recommended price is still just a price. Compare against tracked indicative ranges, not against the sticker.
